A Plateau State High Court on Friday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Ponjul Yakubu, to death by hanging, for shooting his father to death. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice A.I. Ashoms gave the sentence after he found Yakubu guilty of a one-count charge of culpable homicide, punishable with death under section 221 of the Penal Code. “Going by the findings of this court, you, Ponjul Yakubu, mercilessly took the life of your father, Mr Domsing Yakubu, in cold blood. “You have, however, shown remorse and appeared sober throughout your trial; however, this sentence is mandatory as the law states that any person convicted of murder shall be punished with death by hanging. “The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Ponjul Yakubu, will be hanged until you are dead. Mexico was rocked by a second massive earthquake in as many weeks Tuesday — on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that killed thousands. Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 quake was centered about 70 miles southeast of the capital Mexico City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Many fled from office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue as structures there swayed “sickeningly” and objects were rattled off desks and walls, the Associated Press reported. Former Mexican ambassador Jorge Guajardo tweeted video of the city after the quake, showing smoke or dust rising from several buildings. The extent of injuries was not immediately clear, but the upheaval comes less than two weeks after an 8.2 temblor

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended its strike after a final four-hour meeting with the Federal Government delegation, which ended around 9pm in Abuja on Monday. The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, addressed a briefing at the Nigeria Labour Congress secretariat to announce the union’s “conditional suspension of the strike.” Ogunyemi said the strike was suspended, after the union gave the Federal Government a deadline of the end of October to fulfil its promises. He said, “We have signed a new Memorandum of Action today (Monday). Each item on the list in the MoA has a timeline attached. It is our hope that our trust will not be dashed again. Three food vendors have been apprehended by members of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Network for allegedly cooking, preparing vultures and dead donkeys and selling them as chicken meat to the general public at the Tombia market Etegwe, Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State. They were handed over to men of the Akenfa Division, Bayelsa Police command. The food vendors who identified themselves as Doris, Finegirl, and Beauty, said they hail from Ughelli community, in Delta State. The women, who confessed to selling vulture meat and carcasses of donkeys to unsuspecting buyers, added that they imported the meats from neighbouring states into the state and sell at cheap and affordable prices to buyers, mostly those who own restaurants, bars and canteens. Nouah cleared the air while fielding questions as a guest of Classic 97.3 FM radio. Ramsey Nouah said he would prefer to be called a Nigerian and not an Israeli or Lebanese.
