Looks like APC is alone in the Decision to Boycott the Rivers State Local Government Elections
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s (RSIEC) announcement on the date for Local Government Elections in Rivers State, has stirred up politics in the state. After the announcement, the All Progressive Congress (APC) – main opposition in the state, said it will not participate in the Elections. It said it will challenge the decision of the electoral body in court, because it was made in contempt to the court.
However, from indications, the APC in Rivers State may be the only party among scores of registered political parties in the state to challenge the conduct of the elections. In a Press Conference yesterday, the Chairman of the Umbrella body of registered political parties in Rivers State – the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Samuel Ihunwo said the council, made up of about 60 political parties are ready for the elections, and are happy with the decision of the electoral body.
“We inform the whole world that all other political parties in Rivers State, about 60 political parties are happy with the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for putting the machinery in place to conduct free, fair, genuine Local Government Elections on June 16th 2018.”
Mr. Samuel who is also the state Chairman of the Independent Democratic Party berated the All Progressive Congress’ decision to boycott the elections. He said the decision was borne out of fear, and is only a propaganda for its own political gain.
The APC are awaiting a supreme court decision on 22 local council chairmen who were removed by a High Court in Port Harcourt after an election in 2015. The 22 chairmen were elected under the All Progressive Congress.
