Kudos to a young man in Ghana has got himself trending online after designing a bicycle which rides on water. The young man identified as Frank Darko revealed that he was a final year student at the Takoradi Technical University, Ghana – pursuing a course in Graphic Design before he deferred the course due to some personal reasons. The young inventor revealed that the special bicycle is his first invention and it was built in four months as he started working on it since August this year.

Zimbabwe's New President Emmerson Mnangagwa Sworn In

Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as Zimbabwe's president in a ceremony at a packed stadium in the country's capital, Harare. It follows the dramatic departure of Robert Mugabe after 37 years of authoritarian rule. The former vice-president's dismissal earlier this month led the ruling Zanu-PF party and the army to intervene and force Mr Mugabe to quit. Mr Mnangagwa, who had fled the country, returned from exile on Wednesday. The opposition is urging Mr Mnangagwa, who has been part of the ruling elite, to end the "culture of corruption". Although Mr. Mnangagwa has unseated Zimbabwe's long-time ruler, he is still associated by many with some of the worst atrocities committed under the ruling Zanu-PF party since the country gained independence in 1980. Students at the University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Obafemi Awolowo University, have emerged tops in the just-concluded Bar Finals Examination. This was contained in the analysis of performance by universities in the August 2017 Bar final examination results of the Nigerian Law School. While six students at the UNILAG emerged with First Class honours, four emerged from UNN and three from OAU.   Two students each also emerged with first class grade from the University of Ibadan, Lagos State University, Osun State University, and Babcock University. University of Ilorin, Igbinedion University, Ambrose Alli University, Afe Babalola University, and Adekunle Ajasin University also have a student each graduating with  first class. Out of the 515 foreign students that participated in the examination, none graduated with a first class, 134 failed and 275 passed. Nigerian Army Orders Soldiers To Learn Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo Before 2019

The Nigerian Army has called on the soldiers and officers to learn three major languages in Nigeria before 2019. The languages include Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, according to a statement signed by the army spokesperson, Brigadier General Sani Usman on Wednesday. It says that while English Language remains the country and army official language, the force has directed the soldiers to learn the three major languages to help their professionalism. It stated that this would help in Civil Military Cooperation activities and investigation.

The former vice president of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa has been asked to return home from exile.  His personal assistant Larry Mavhima disclosed this, adding that Comrade Mnangagwa will on Wednesday return home after staying in exile for more than two weeks. Mnangagwa fled the country following his ouster by ex-president Robert Mugabe about three weeks ago. President Robert Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe President on Tuesday after much pressure by the country’s army and the plot by the parliament to impeach him.

Hospital holds mother, newborn baby for four months over unpaid bill

For more than four months after Agbo was delivered of a baby boy through caesarean section in a Lagos hospital, God Cures Hospital, she had yet to be discharged over a bill of N215,000. Our correspondent gathered that the baby’s father, Duru, had already abandoned both mother and child at the medical facility in the Ilogbo, Ojo area of Lagos State. The 27-year-old man, who spoke with  PUNCH Metro  on the telephone on Monday, said he left Agbo and their baby because he could not raise the bill charged by the hospital for the operation. Technology giant, Google has honoured Nigerian literary icon, Chinua Achebe on its doodle, adding up to the long list of awards clinched by the writer in life and in death. Google said on its website on Thursday that it honoured Achebe on its doodle today; Nov. 16 would have been Achebe’s 87th birthday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Google Doodle is a special logo on Google’s homepage that is always temporarily alternated and intended to celebrate holidays, events, achievements and people. Twenty-six coffins were laid out in Salerno's Monumental Cemetery on Friday morning, watched by a military guard, local politicians, rescue workers and journalists. A Catholic archbishop and a Muslim imam both said prayers. Each coffin bore a white rose on top, though only two were marked with names: Marian Shaka and Osato Osaro. The city's mayor declared Friday a day of mourning. Local schools have been asked to hold a minute of silence, while light displays in the city centre will be switched off on Friday evening in remembrance. The girls' bodies were recovered at sea and brought to Italy on November 3rd. Post-mortem examinations revealed that 25 of the victims had drowned, while one had a wound to her side. Former first lady, Patience Jonathan has  asked the federal high court in Abuja to set aside the court order of may 30,2017 that froze her 16 separate bank accounts containing the sum of $5.8million united states dollars and n3.5 billion on the ground that it has expired. Patience Jonathan also told the court that the orders of interim forfeiture, including a subsequent one issued on October 10, 2017  cannot be extended due to abuse of court process by the economic and financial crimes commission, (EFCC).  The application was filed by the incorporated trustees of Ariwabai Aruera Reach out foundation, nine other companies and patience Jonathan who claimed were  the owners of the alleged sums. The Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics, ASUP says it will begin an indefinite  strike from midnight on Sunday following the expiration of the 7-day notice to government. ASUP president Usman Dutse said in a statement that government has not taken seriously issues raised by the teachers as it failed to even call for a meeting as done with unions in other tertiary institutions. Dutse also said that its complains include shortfall in salaries, non-payment of salaries both in state and federal polytechnics. The union is also demanding for the passage of the amended bill to establish the national polytechnic commission and the recall of some members allegedly dismissed illegally by certain institutions. Information from the ministry of Labour and employment press office however says several attempts to meet with the polytechnic teachers on Saturday, failed.

College Of Education Staff Ikere-Ekiti Stage Protest, Accuse School Management Of Corruption

Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the college of Education Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti state on Tuesday began a seven-day protest to demand the payment of their unremitted salary deductions by the school management led by Mojisola Onyarekhua. The workers, who barricaded the entrance of the institution, were asking the school management to immediately pay the outstanding three months deductions or risk an indefinite strike by the union. The school authority led by the chairman of the governing council who addressed the protesting workers pleaded for more time to sort out their grievances.

COEASU Urges FG TO Re-Open Stalled Re negotiations Or Face Strike

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, is appealing to the ministers of education and labour and employment to re-open negotiations on the 2010 agreement which has been allegedly stalled by the leadership of the committee of provosts of federal colleges of education. At a briefing in Abuja, president of the association, Nuhu Ogirma expressed worry over the seizure of the union’s dues and cooperative societies contribution by the office of the accountant-general of the federation. The union has therefore given government two weeks ultimatum to address issues raised or face an indefinite strike. The colleges of education teachers also expressed concerns over the non-payment of salaries for twenty-eight months and the arrears of promotion in states like Osun and Oyo. The teachers however advised against threats to proscribe unions by some state governments, arguing that labour is an integral part of the development and growth of any economy.

So, I will as well wish Mr President the same – to recontest,” he told State House correspondents in Abuja. “Any first-term governor would want to go for second tenure and if that’s what you wish yourself, you should be honest enough to wish another person the same.”

Cross River University: Students Lock Out Management, Staff Over Asuu Proposed Strike

For more than four hours on Wednesday, , the management and staff of cross river university of technology (CRUTECH), Calabar campus, were held hostage   by students of the institution. The students’ action followed the resumption of strike action by CRUTECH’s branch of academic staff union of universities (ASUU).  the national executive council (NEC) of ASUU gave CRUTECH’s branch of the union permission to embark on strike, following unresolved industrial issues with the cross river state  government. According to reliable sources from the union, all attempts by leaders of the union to seek audience on those issues with Governor Ben Ayade of cross river state, have so far proved abortive. Student government executive who preferred anonymity confirmed the protest, explaining that students were tired of incessant strikes  by their lecturers, especially after a similar national strike action was suspended a one month ago.

Workers in Kaduna state today staged a protest over the planned sack of 21, 000 teachers by the state government. Recall that the governor Nasir El-Rufai-led government conducted a competency test of school teachers in the state last month and as much as 21, 000 of them failed the primary-four questions set in the competency test. The protesting workers led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, stormed the state Assembly in Zaria, the state capital where they destroyed cars and sliding doors. The workers are demanding that the government should rescind its decision or have the entire labor force to contend with. They argue that the state government has no constitutional powers to organize such examination for teachers, saying only the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has the mandate to do so.
